HW#29 Merchants of Cool

When it comes to advertising, i don't banning it to a certain age would help because another age group would be manipulated, and banning it all together i don't think is really possible because everybody advertises in their own different way, like they might not even work there but people tell each other the awesome store that sell all the best things for cheap, or that tattoo parlor with the coolest tattoo artist and how its not that expensive, and even though its not an ad, people still are finding out what's cool, more slowly since its not being shown to them immediately but they'll still find out. People will just follow what they see around them, or on TV like MTV and how the video said that it's practically just commercials since all the artists that go there are advertising their music, so banning probably wouldn't really have much of an effect and if you ban advertising you'd practically have to put everybody in jail.

"Girls are taught to flaunt their sexuality even though they don't understand it yet"

Teenagers usually go along with that trend because they hear all the people around them saying "oh thats sexy" "thats hot", and they want that type of acknowledgment as well, we all seek attention. I believe both the people who advertise and the people who choose to follow this trend are to blame, because the people who advertise it are influencing kids to be more sluty, which can lead to STD's and teen pregnancy. Also the people who dress that way and act sluty are also to blame, because they let themselves be talk into this madness, to wear really short skirts and show as much cleavage as allowed, and seem like they don't have any respect for themselves. I know it might never really go away since its so "hot" but hopefully people will start thinking and dress a bit less revealing, and learn to not always do what they see others do.

HW#30 theorizing of cool

Being cool is another way to just make ourselves seem more important in the world, to fill the emptiness we feel inside. The emptiness we feel is believe to come from the fact that we're going to die, and because we're going to die, we want to leave an impression to the world, we want to be remembered, missed, and valued. Which is weird because usually when people think of how we're going to die, they think then what's the point of doing anything, yet we're taking on a bunch of roles to make people look at us and like us. Like how the class joker does all that they can to make people laugh, and pay attention to him, and when no one laughs they feel embarrassed and sad because no one acknowledged them.

We use many roles in our life, and those roles just mess with how we use to be, coolness trick us into being different, we lose our moral sense (andy), like how people are so rude to other by teasing them, and messing with them, just to seem cool to people, the coolness is just brainwashing even more then what we were at the beginning. People use up their money to buy more things that are in style or that they think will make them look cool, and fit in with everyone else, which is does, but just because we're all using each other to make our life meaningful.
We also use sex to fill up the emptiness, because that means the person is attractive, and being attractive and knowing how to do "things" is part of being cool. Then these things lead to pregnancy, which is another thing we do to feel our live, that most of us wants to do, because having a miniature you is cool apparently, and people everyones doing.

I think the only way to even remotely be near filling up that hole, is just to accept the fact you're going to die, and that you're just like everyone else, nothing special nothing new. Like in Tuesdays with Morrie, he was upset at first, but then he just accepted it, and seem to be at peace. If we can learn to just accept the truth, than i feel we wouldn't be as brainwashed as we are now. But accepting the truth is harder than living in a lie, it seems.

hw#28 informal research

1)In the television show Jersey Shore from what i've seen, they show being cool, as someone who parties nearly every night, is good at conversing with people, as shown when they started to work at the store and being attractive enough to get people or get laid. Also for girls being kind of sluttie is good because in the show two girls had boyfriends and regardless of that fact they still hooked up with other people and made out with other people. Being a sweetheart and comforting yet kind of bitchy is "Cool" because Sami is nice and talks to other when they need to talk, but at the same time she does fucked up things, like hooking up with someone and then hooking up with their friend afterwards, and not caring.

2)http://www.wikihow.com/Be-Cool
This shows steps/rules to be cool, and here are a few steps that interested me:
a)don't care so much about what other people think of you
b)to be aware of how people recognize you/see you
c) learn how to laugh at yourself
d) use appropriate language

the first two step contradict each other because how can you not care what other think yet at the same time depend on people to see what type of person you are, i don't think you'll ever be able to just not care what others think, there's always someone you look at, to know if you've improved or not, people influence us, and we cant not be affect by the system.
learning how to laugh at yourself is something i wouldn't think would help you be cool, because people who want to be cool, wouldn't want to be humiliated because then they'd look like each body else, like someone they dont want to be.
Also using appropriate language seems not right to me, because so far from what i've seen in school, TV, outside, the cool people usually talk in slang and curse a lot, tell sick or perverted jokes, which everybody laughs at, and yes they do talk appropriately when they need to but usually they talk in slang and cruse.

3)In Twilight by Stephenie Meyer the cool people in the book were the group of vampire in school, who are beautiful, dark, mysterious and forbidden, everything that drives a woman crazy. The idea of people being able to get taste of the forbidden "fruit" is awesome and cool, and people just love it, they're always wanting to know more, and just keeping reading and watching the, movies. This idea has influenced the culture so much that people just keep writing stories about vampire and human relationship or human and paranormal relationships, and create a lot of art of it. So being able to have a thing going on with the forbidden is cool, and also being beautiful and mysterious is cool.

4)http://www.cyh.com/HealthTopics/HealthTopicDetailsKids.aspx?p=335&np=287&id=1478
In the site it says that the way you look is important, more important in a non-uniform school then one that has uniform, because everyone wears the same thing and they have to worry about picking an outfit thats different then others. I dont think thats true because based on movies and books, people in a uniformed school try their hardest to look cool, by shortening their skirts, bagging up their jeans, wearing accessories, and making the sure their appearance looks good. I think the way you look is more important to them because when you're cool, you're trying to look different then others, but in a uniformed school everybody is basically wearing the same thing, so they'd probably be trying harder then non-uniformed school kids, to look different than one another. Also "being yourself" is something that'll make you cool, which i disagree with because you're always being influenced by someone you can never really be yourself, and what if when you're "being yourself" you actually kind of awkward, thats not cool, things/people that aren't awkward are cool.

5)Kimya Dawson "being cool"
lyrics:
Is new york city really like a graveyard they all ask me
and i say well it was last week but man that was in the past
see i stopped going to the places where the people act so nasty
and pretentious 'cause i'm happy sitting with my friends in sidewalk singing songs

and some people are still standing in the way of where i'm going
so i say please excuse me, step aside, or keep on moving
and i guess they sensed that my momentum meant that i was winning
but i'm only just beginning and i'd rather go with friends than go alone

and some people grab my hands and some people grab my shirt
some people race ahead to see if they can get there first
some people stay behind 'cause they've got something else in mind
whatever you decide if you are true to you you're gonna be alright

like akida he's a father now he is in love with amber
their baby's name is skyler he's a baby of the summer
i wonder as i wander if i'll ever settle down
or if every day i'll take my roots uprooted en route to another town

i was sitting on a couch somewhere watching vh-1
when i found out that bruce springsteen is his mother's only son
i'm my mother's only daughter and we were both born to run
even he says it's amazing raising babies in the place where you come from

but i am a rock tumbler i've got rocks inside my head
and just because they come out shining doesn't mean that they are diamonds
and i guess that my worst nightmare is your very favorite bar
when i'm worth my weight in shale and slate i'll know that i'm a super duper star

i'll be a great big ball of burning gas and i'll be sitting on my big fat ass
sipping cristal light beside a plastic wading pool
and the next day i'll be somewhere else part of me will hate myself
part of me will know deep down that i am pretty cool
the part of me that knows i never cared for being cool
the part of me that knows i never cared for being cool
the part of me that knows i never cared for being cool

In the lyrics its says "I'd rather go with friends than go alone" and that reminds me of those shows/movies that show the popular good looking girls going to the bathroom together, instead of alone, i guess its because they depend on others to be popular so to look cooler, they want it to seem like they're always being surround with people no matter where they go, to show that they're not a loner, that they're cool.
Also the "some people race ahead to see if they can get there first" makes me think of how people compete to be number one, to be cooler than others, to be more fashionable. People always go against each other to see who can make more people laugh, who has more friends, i remember a time where my friend and her friend had this bet going on, about who can get the most myspace friends, because the person has bragging rights then the end and they'll seem like a better person to chill with.

hw#26/27 surveys

Photobucket<~ alex

Alexandra Moy, 17 years old - friend

Whats your definition of being cool?
like being well like by ALOT of people, you know, like fitting in well

Are you well liked?
well by my friends, i mean I'm cool with some other people but not that close and not with like the whole

Do you consider yourself cool?
um well i dont think im like the coolest person ever, but im not the lamest person either, im probably like in between ya know?

Why do you dye your hair so many times?
Well because i like having different styles, and you know originally i want to have cotton blue and pink hair, and i finally have it, after having it orangey for a while.

You know who you looked like when you had that orangey hair, That girl from Paramore, the lead singer.
eh, well i guess i can see why but i wasnt thinking of her when i did it, i just wanted something new you know? my old hair was blahh

Blahh?
you know what i mean  like oldish!

From where/who is your style inspired from?
Well my friends i guess, and i like the mismatch style you usually see asians rock

And you're partially asian
yup

And where do your friends get their styles from?
celebrities i guess, from the media, and other people

Sara Dhiri, 17 years old - stranger

So, whats your definition of being cool?
Fitting in

Do you think you're cool?
no

why?
I dont feel like I'm cool

Who DO you think is cool?
Chin, a friend from school

what makes her cool?
She's always so bubbly and friendly to everyone, and i think thats awesome

Photobucket
Selemny, 16 years old - cousin

What's your definition of being cool?
being liked by everyone but also have some haters, and having a bunch of friends, and having a crazy personality

Why crazy personality?
because then that means they're fun to be around with and to party with

So if i throw this chair right at you...I'd be cool?
what the hell  no stupid! i mean crazy by like wildish you know, like those people from those reality tv on MTV like real world, to not be afraid of being loud and wild

I've seen those people throw tables, even worse
oh my god  shut up

Ok anyways do you think you're cool yourself?
Well i think i am, i mean alot of people like me, and boys are always crushing on me, and i have alot of friends and people ARE jealous of me

I never knew i had such a conceited cousin, does this make you cool too?
well being conceited is good too, it shows you dont care about what other people think, but at the same time too much isnt cute, and just blame sluttish

Sluttish? how?
like when someones too conceited you usually see that person all up on someone, and date so many people and sex them up just to brag, ya know?

I guess...

So whats cool now
well i notice ALOT of people, girls mostly are turning Bi, i really dont understand why, or when it started, but like its so weird

why is it weird?
because back then the only bi people i knew were my friend and you, and your friend Alex. Like back then people wouldnt dare admit outloud that they were bi, because people would look at then weirdly, and their parents would be so like upset about it, and now everybodies all open about it, its just so random.

ya i know, do you think thats cool?
I think its ok for people to be gay, bi, straight, but to make it a trend its just wrong, i feel its wrong to the real gay, bisexual people, dont you?

ya i guess but it'll pass right?
yah things always pass and go, people will get over that phase

homework#25

To Yazmin:

Yazy-yaz

i like how you described your character as someone everybody wants, and yet didnt make her a completely idiot or bitch, like most people do do when they think of "cool" people. Its refreshing.
I also like the last line you used "she's everything i want to be and yet nothing i can be", kind of poetic, nice way to end it.

To Chloe:

Chloe

i enjoy you're story alot, its a true SOF definition of cool, the whole elevator thing. I know that's happen to me a number of times so i can really connect to it.
I also like how it never got boring even tho it was just about one scene.

To Jin:

I like how your story still says alot even though its kind of short. I really liked the part where the character speaks to himself in the mirror, almost like to reassure himself that he is cool, i thought that was cool.
and the gold part kind of reminds me of someone whose showing off their high status in society, like hes showing off how cool he is.

To Connor:

I really liked your story,
I like how you used more dialogue than description like how most others do. I like how you use alot of slang in your post, not all the other blogs had that much slang in it, and it made your story enjoyable.

To Samantha Cotto:

Your story reminded me alot of the scene from "feed" where all the girls went to the bathroom to change their hairstyle because there was a new "it" style.
I like how you start off embarrassing the character instead of telling everyone how cool he is.
Also his name, you know how the cool people usually make up weird words/names, and just say them all the time, i guess that connects with coolness and at the same time is a name where people can make fun of him, i like that, and im mad you actually used it lol.

Some patterns i've notice while reading everyone's story, were that usually the people we think are "cool" are jerks, like in Connors story, the main character was a complete ass, and just started things no matter what, for pure entertainment. Also the value of things, like new clothes, shoes, style comes up alot, which is a given since everybody's opinion on style is different, it can be more dark like chloes or hip like in Samantha's.
Also beauty has a part of it too, like in Yazmin's the story the character was all lovely, everybody desired her, wanted to be like her. Also like in jin's story, the character makes himself look good so that people would like him. In Chloes the characters more non-caring, yet that emotionless facade is appealing to people, not as much as beauty, but makes a person look cool.

Cool story

"Nah it doesn't hurt, I'm use to it by now ya know?" Sasha was showing off yet another new piercing, this time it was on her nose.
She continues showing everybody her piercing, closing in especially to the boys.
Sasha pulls out her cell showing a picture of her nose after the piercing, not evening caring about getting caught by the teacher.
The teacher walked down to her table putting his hand out.
"nah im sorry i'll pay attention now" She said putting her phone in her pocket
"uh no give it"
"what the hell i wont take it out again i swear to god" Sasha's voice becoming a bit too loud
"Dont make me call" the teacher threaten
"What the fuck, there's so many other people texting, chatting why dont you take theirs?!" She makes a big deal about it, but in the end hands it over.
"this is fucking bullshit"
"You can leave then" The teacher pointed to the door

She stayed quiet, just sulking and mumbling all bunch of curse under her breathe. People giggle/laugh and Sasha's face turns as red as a freshly made piercing.

Art Project - poem

A dark little corner at the end of the room,
A small bright screen burning into my eyes,
into my thoughtless goo of a brain,
Laughters and voices echo in the background
but i pay no mind to them
what matters now, are the sounds of the keys crackling away
as i try to level Angela up to become a sorceress,
chat with my friends,
and watch whatever i want.

"honey come with me to the store"
no

"turn off that computer!"
just a few more minutes

hours later

"you need to get off that computer now!"
silence

3:30 am
bed time

wake up and do it again.

Photobucket

My art is probably a mirror, because it just reflects what other people already know, like how people stay up all night on the computer, or on their x-box playing games with other people online, and how its unhealthy for us since we get little sleep, which can lead to weight gain, acne, loss/increase in appetite, and depression.
When i look at my art i don't really feel anything, because i know things like this happen its nothing new, and i know its not good, but sometimes we just cant help but stay up late on our devices, like if its for school work. So to me my art isn't really anything outstanding, the only thing i think of thats even a little interesting is that, in the picture i drew the person's soul is being sucked into the computer and the persons eyes are reddish from lack of sleep giving a daze-ish look in her eyes, adding onto the whole zombie look.

HW#13- Feed part B

"Art is not a mirror with which to reflect the world. It is a hammer with which to shape it" Bert Brecht

In Feed by M.T. Anderson, the story reflected a lot on how teenagers are today, like how they just care about being entertained and ourselves, don't like feeling empty, and don't care about the environment. So I would say that this book is a mirror because its like a mirror to our world, aside from the change in time period and the new accessories they're the same, we all want the new thing, the new style. The feed is like the TV or internet, filling us up with more junk each day.

At the same time though i would say it was a hammer as well because in the book, M.T. Anderson would give hints of what is to come, whether its in the book or in real life. He gave hints of violets malfunctioning and in the real world he's hinting on how it'll become if we continue being the way we are, in the book there were no birds, no more trees, and in real life animals are becoming extinct, we're losing trees by using up a lot of materials that are made of paper.

I think a mirror can be a hammer, because some people after finding out about the real world take action, like animal testing, so in a way a mirror can become a hammer if it influences people to change who they are and how the world is.

HW#12 - Feed A

I think feed is right on target how a modern teenager lives. In the book feeds are what is most important, maybe in our world its not as important as the feed is in the book, but it is similar to the technology we use, like computers, TVs, and especially cell phones. In the book the teenagers are always talking to each other through the feed, like how we use cell phones to communicate all the time.

Also when they were stuck in the hospital feed-less, they were all bored out of their minds and miserable at first, kind of like when we're on punishment and aren't allow to use the computer, cell or watch tv or when none of those things are working, we're bored because there is nothing to do so we just mope and sulk in our little corner or bed. Then when we go out to hang with people we have a blast, like how the group in feed did when they played together without the feed.

Also in the book, people don't really care about the environment, there are no birds, no more trees, instead they have buildings that supply air. This is like our society, we pollute the air, chop down more trees everyday making more animals homeless, killing them. Thanks to us, global warming is happening, yet we're not doing much. Even though we're trying to make the earth a better place, like them, we're not, and i wouldnt be surprised if some day we dont have any animals around either.

Experiment # 1

For my experiment i spend a few days with out my sidekick and my computer since i didn't have internet, and couldn't get on AIM. I was bored, as expected since I'm usually on my computer reading manga, fanfiction, or watching videos, but since i couldn't do neither i spent my days after school, reading my independent reading book, Feed, and taking naps, and doing my homework. I was so annoyed because i used my sidekick and computer to communicate with my friends, since i dont hang out much after school, only on weekends or friday, when theres no school the next day.
Then the next few days my computer was working and then my phone, and i right away i went on my computer to amuse myself. I realized that even i am realllyyy addicted to the computer and cell, even though i dont go on much, and i dont even use my phone unless its to play sudoku once in a while, and it made me think of all the people i know that are even more addicted to their cells or their computer than me, and it sounds awful to me, if i think my habits are too much, then what about those other people who are even more obsessed.
I thought back to how i spent my days when i didnt have my internet, and i noticed how even though i didnt have any of those things to amuse me, i still stayed inside my apartment, and now that i look back to it, i regret it, i should've went outside even though there was no one to hang out with, i could've sat outside on the steps and maybe read my books outside, or draw in my sketch book.

response to video comment

Victor - thank you the comment, I'm very thankful. You're right on how i myself seem to doubt my addictions, though i never meant to make it seem i would force my child on something, I'm just merely expressing my feelings. i agree that out door activities and indoor ones might have the same results, like weight loss or something, but i still feel that getting some fresh air would still be better for you. Though i do agree that forcing your kid is bad, though maybe there are expectations in life.

Granit - thanks for the comment, yah the whole TV and computer thing on the same time happens a lot, since i like watching music videos and do my work, or read manga. I agree with you on how kids sit down while doing Wii fit, my godson was doing the running exercise one where you had to either have it in your hand or pocket and run in place, and he was just shaking the Wii remote while sitting down, and i just thought that, that was one of the weirdest/stupidest thing i've seen, but it made me realize even more how we shouldn't depend on video games for keeping in shape, because there is always a to cheat and just do all the thing while sitting or laying down, and that doesn't really help with keeping in shape. Im glad I'm not the only one who thinks outdoor activities are better then indoor activities.

comments of partners videos

Granit - I agree with you on how i wouldn't want my child to spend all his time on the computer. Though that does make us hypocrites, since we always ignore our parents/adults when they tell us to get off out computers or cells. Something you can add more about is the first paragraph, like maybe your opinions on how you use (or maybe need?) cell, computer, tv for entertainment and passing time.

until next time - maxiel

Video project

As i think about the amount of hours im on the computer while having my tv on at the same time for double amusement, and i think about how my parents dont like how much im on the computer so much, which makes me picture myself in the future when i have kids, and i would probably feel the same as how my parents feel now, i wouldnt want my child to use up their time on the internet when they can be outside getting fresh air, and doing more healthy things.

Though there are gaming systems that claim to help people become more healthy, like the wii fit, i think its OK, like it might be good to do when its raining outside and you cant do outside activities, but i feel it would be better to do those activities outside or in a gym, and not using the tv for help, because doing exercise would feel better doing it outside in the breeze, and its more healthy, then being cooped up inside.

informal research internet

http://www.cmch.tv/mentors/hottopic.asp?id=70

22% of young children own cell phones (age 6-9), 60% of tweens (age 10-14), 84% of teens (15-18). Shows that as you get older, you get more into technology. Also according to a market research firm, the Yankee Group, 54% of 8 to 12 years old will have cell phones within the next three years. So they're saying that if we continue being so obsessed/addicted to technology, that it'll start affecting the younger generation more, and the percentage of young child owning cells will increase.

http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/2004-12-06-complicating-things_x.htm

If teachers overuse computer instead of other ways of teaching, it can actually harm the students. I find this interesting because we always use computers to do our homework and projects, and to do research, and instead of it helping us, its actually harming us.

http://kidshealth.org/parent/positive/family/tv_affects_child.html

2/3 infants an toddlers and kids under 6 years old watch a tv 2 hours a day, kids form ages 8-18 spend nearly 4 hours watching tv, plus 2 more hours on the computer doing non-school work, and playing video games. The recommended amount for kids is, 0 hours for any kids under 2 since the first 2 years of life is considered a critical time for brain development, and no more then 1-2 hours for kids older then 2. Which makes me think of my cousins baby who is 5 months old, and how my cousin uses the tv as a way for the baby to get distracted, and i wonder just how different the baby would be if he grew without tv his two first year, vs watching tv like he is now. Also how kids that spend 4 hours per day watching tv are more likely to be over weight, which i agree with, because they are most likely spending those 4 hours doing thing not related to school, and then you add the time they spend on their school work, and at the they'd be going to sleep, having not gotten the recommended amount of exercise they need.

Blog Comments

Yurelis - I agree with you on how people are becoming too depended on technology, and that sometimes technology is good, by connecting with family and friends, and it made me realize how i dont even use facebook/myspace alot, i just have it because it was something everybody was talking about and telling me to get, maybe you can talk about how people pressure other people into getting things. I also liked how you asked questions on what you wanted to know more of, it makes the blog more interesting.

looking forward to your future ideas, Maxiel Jimenez

Juliette - I like how you added the example of the VMAs, its a good example how people are addicted to technology, because its true everyone did make comments on it so quickly, which made people who didnt want the VMA like me curious to the point of going to youtube the next day to see a clip of it, which makes me realize how people are always being influenced by technology to get more addicted to it, maybe next time you can write more about the influence technology has on people.

cant wait for the next blog, Maxiel Jimenez

HW3 first blog - Digital/electronic media

As technology got better and faster, we became so much more depended on all these electronic things, like cells. People went from having a phone to just communicate with their friends and family, to having a phone for texting, watching videos/movies, and listening to music to use up most of their time on something that probably isn't worth it, when they can be doing more productive things. For example i week to Georgia this summer, and there was no computer, no TV, no gaming systems, just my cousin's car whenever he came over. At the end of my vacation i felt better than when i was here in new york surrounded by all these electronics. In georgia because there was nothing else to do I move around more, got more fresh air, went to bed early, and for up early instead of waking up in the afternoon/evening because i stayed up late, which always made me feel tired even though i had just woken up.
I think even though some of the electronics would be helpful for us, it best to use them as a last resort, or at a minimum. All these electronics are affecting us mentally, emotional, and some physically from not doing enough activities where you have to move around. Its gotten to the point where we wont socialize with people, but with our electronics.
